el presidente

The mayor of Piedras Negras is our neighbor this summer.  He's in the process of building a new house and until it's finished, he's staying at the hotel.  In Mexico, being a mayor comes with quite a bit of power...or at least more than we're used to mayors having in the States.  More power means more protection, and more protection for the mayor means I'm not alone (and safer than ever) on my 4:15 am runs around the hotel.

Since I've been here, the cabinet (not sure the official title) has met in the banquet room once or twice each week.  As we pulled in today after distributing roof panels, they were loading up on the fun red bus to head back to city hall after their meeting.  Apparently they do this not only to save on transportation costs and attract some attention (after all, Piedras is the "City of the Future"), but also because city officials require more security here (and this way you don't need quite as many trucks loaded with cops and their machine guns).
